Section 31 of 34

Soil contamination can occur from previous industrial uses or illegal dumping. A major culprit in soil contamination is leaking Underground Storage Tanks (USTs), which are often found on older commercial properties or old gas station sites. If a tank corrodes and leaks oil or chemicals, it can contaminate the soil and the local groundwater supply. Federal and state laws strictly regulate the monitoring and removal of these tanks, and the cleanup costs for a leaking tank can be astronomical.
